About Chewie

Chewie was born January 3, 1997 to KC Chief Pugsly (b. July 7, 1995)and Brengman’s Wantanbe Pretty (b. Jan. 25, 1993). He is officially registerd with the AKC as Chief Chewie.

Born in the West Village of New York City, Chewie found a home with a magazine editor who featured the pug in her magazine whenever possible. His name is derived from the nickname for Jesus in Spanish: Chuy. It is also a reference to the Star Wars character Chewbacca, who was named after the Russian word for dog himself and often called Chewie. Chewie was rescued from Urban Pets in New York City when his MaMa was on the way to the Star Wars re-release.

After moving to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Chewie became the object of several projects created by artists living in his building. From photographs to paintings, the pug was an excellent subject. Building on success, his MaMa created a small culture-jamming campaign aimed to parody the Jesus billboards found throughout the South. “Ask Chewie”, “Chewie Knows”, and “What Would Chewie Do” became clever posters that appeared in several places throughout Williamsburg. In 2002, Chewie went global by launching this a website.

Chewie preaches the Pug Life. While vague on defined doctorine, the pug life seems to encompass buddhist philosophy without meaning to. He does not claim any divine status for himself and welcomes everyone, animal and human, to practice the Pug Life.

Chewie likes to sleep, eat cheese, and listen to music. Some of his favorites are the Super Furry Animals, the Foo Fighters, the Flaming Lips, Ween, and Johnny Cash. Blue Cheese is his favorite, in case that was what you really wanted to know.
